"THREE GAMBLING GAMES TO
PLAY AT HOME WITH THE FAMILY"
Whoever said that gambling games can only be
played within the premises of a casino or a
gambling den? There are actually many gambling
games that can be used to teach children logic
and strategy, and these games can be fun to play
with the family.
Three of these gambling games that you can play
at home with your family are poker, mahjong and
blackjack. Here is a brief overview of how these
games are played.
Poker
There are many versions of poker played in
online casinos and poker rooms today, but the
more popular ones involve the use of what they
call community cards –cards that the dealer lays
down on the table which everyone in the game can
use to build their hands. Of these poker
variations that utilize community cards, perhaps
the most popular is Texas hold’em poker.
As many as ten players can join in a game of
Texas hold’em, and they can alternate in taking
the role of the dealer. Each of these players is
dealt with two cards, called the hole cards. The
goal of the game is to win the pot, and to do
that, the players must come up with the best
hand possible using their two hole cards and
three of the five community cards.

Mahjong
Mahjong is a traditional Chinese gambling game
that makes use of tiles. The literal meaning of
its name is “a hundred intelligences.” Just like
in poker, this game requires glib, an
inscrutable poker face and some strategizing.
The tiles in mahjong are stacked on the table to
create walls corresponding to the four
directions: North, South, East and West. There
are four suites in mahjong and a number of
special tiles. Four players sit together at the
table and are each given 13 tiles to play with.
The aim of mahjong is to be the first to come up
with four sets and a pair of matching tiles.
Each set must be composed of three consecutive
numbers of a particular suit. In order to build
their sets, the players take turns discarding
tiles they do not want and then replacing what
they have discarded with a tile from the wall.
They can also pick up the tile that the player
before them has discarded, but in doing so, they
forfeit their right to get a fresh tile from the
wall.
Blackjack
Blackjack is an exciting game of skill, patience
and strategy. In blackjack, the numeric cards
are worth their face value while the picture
cards carry the value of 10. An ace can either
be a one or an 11. The object of the game is to
build a hand as close to 21 as possible without
going over. Each player is given two cards, and
the dealer can hit the player with another card
as long as the value of the hand does not exceed
21.
For parents who are concerned that they may be
teaching their children to play with their
money, remember that you do not have to play
with money when playing these gambling games at
home. You can substitute the money for the pot
with plastic chips or candy. Bear in mind that
while these games do have their place in casinos
and gambling dens, they are great ways to help
children develop logic and strategy, which they
will need in real life.
